You may not realize it, but without saying anything you could actually be saying a lot.
First of all, what is body language? Body language is non-verbal communication which includes facial expressions, hand movements, posture and even how close we position ourselves to another person.
A person’s body language helps us form an idea of who they are and what they’re about. More information can be gained from non-verbal communication than from what a person actually says.
There is a real science behind body language and being aware of it can help you in a lot of situations.
Here are a few key areas that can help you send the right messages to friends, customers or even your employer:
Eye contact is very important. It’s been said that you’re lying if you glance to the right while talking; and that a glance to the left is a sign you’re trying to remember or retrieve information. If you maintain direct eye contact while listening or speaking to someone it will make them feel you are both interested and honest. Remember though, there is a fine line between direct eye contact and staring a person down!
Crossing your arms or holding an object (handbag or other) with both hands in front of you can show you are defensive or nervous. Meanwhile holding your hands behind your back or to your side can show you have confidence in yourself or in what you’re saying.
Leaning against a wall, bookcase or desk can give the impression you are tired or bored – maybe you are but it’s certainly not a good look at work!
Lastly, have you ever seen the Seinfeld episode with the close talker? It’s pretty funny. A close talker is someone who stands unusually close while having a conversation. It can be quite uncomfortable and is very distracting! Be sure to give people the right amount of personal space and they will be much more likely to engage with you.
So what messages have you been sending? Have fun using this information to rate others or even improve your own body language.
